Choquequirau, in the native language of Quechua, means “Cradle of Gold” and the citadel rests in area once abundant in gold.  The citadel is believed to be one of the last resistance settlements of the Incas before the Spanish conquered the empire.

The ruins reveal sophisticated and advanced architecture, with many aesthetic and artistic features.

The Incas are known for their masterful stonemasonry.  Stucco walls are a beautiful feature found throughout the settlement.

Impressive water channels, originating at the Chunchumayo Creek, supplied water to the entire settlement.

Explore the ceremonial platforms, terraces, and dwellings among lush vegetation and surrounded by the majestic Vilcabamba mountain range.
